Penang makes its stand in 'food fight'
Tuesday, 29 September 2009 12:26

PENANG has joined in the ongoing regional "food fight", expressing disappointment that famed and favourite state dishes such as nasi kandar, pasembur and asam laksa have not been included in the list of 100 types of heritage food and drinks on the Malaysian National Heritage website. Read here and here. This list (view here), includes among others, dishes like Penang char kuey teow, mamak-style fried noodles, roti canai, and chicken rice.

The Penang Indian Muslim community has emphasised that nasi kandar is “definitely a Malaysian original” and should be promoted as such because their ancestors from India first dreamed it up in Penang in the 1900s and had to work with whatever ingredients that they had at hand. The outcome is a uniquely Penang dish. Read here for more on the history of the dish. The same goes for the Penang asam laksa, as many vendors agree that dish should definitely be given due recognition as a “truly Malaysian” food.

Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen’s statement that Malaysia intends to lay claim to several dishes, including nasi lemak, bak kut teh and Hainanese chicken rice (read here) had sparked arguments and discussions, especially in cyberspace among many Malaysian and Singaporeans.
