Delay in mega projects deepens friction

THE DELAYS of two mammoth projects in Penang have caused further friction to the ties between the state and federal government.

In the first instance, the Swettenham Pier new cruise and ferry terminal complex which was due to be completed on September 30 this year, failed to meet the deadline. Read here. In response, the Penang Port Commission (PPC) has asserted that redevelopment of the pier will be completed early next year (2010) and is already 99.9% percent complete. Read here and here. Meanwhile, in the second instance, the completion of the Second Penang bridge has been delayed by a year to 2013. Read here and here.

Penang CM Lim Guan Eng has expressed disappointment with the delay in completion of the Second Penang. He also stressed that action should be taken against any party that had caused the hold-up in the construction. Read here. The completion of both projects is seen as essential to boost the state’s economy, tourism section and transportation service.
